Limiting beliefs
The four questions · based on Byron Katie
A belief that holds you back, looked at through four questions and turned around from every angle. Inspired by "The Work" — Byron Katie's method.
Write a belief that holds you back.
Keep it short, in the first or third person, exactly as it sounds in your mind.
Question 1 — Is it true?
Question 2 — Can you absolutely know that it's true?
Can you guarantee one hundred percent that your thought is the ultimate, unshakeable truth?
Question 3 — How do you react, what happens, when you believe that thought?
Notice your reactions — emotions, sensations in the body, behaviours. Anxiety? Avoidance? Going on the defensive?
Question 4 — Who would you be without that thought?
Imagine how you'd feel, how you'd act, how you'd experience the situation — if you simply couldn't believe this belief.
Turnaround 1 — to the opposite
Reverse the belief. e.g. "I'm not good enough" → "I am good enough."
Turnaround 2 — to yourself
Turn the belief towards yourself. e.g. "He doesn't respect me" → "I don't respect myself (in this situation)."
Turnaround 3 — to the other
Turn the belief towards the other person or the situation. e.g. "He doesn't respect me" → "I don't respect him."
If the belief isn't about another person, turn it towards the situation or life.
